The National History Day theme is Leadership and Legacy. Thomas Jefferson was
one of this country’s founding fathers and he was the third president of the
United States. Thomas Jefferson had many accomplishments and left us notable
legacies. According to Mr. Jim Heilman, an interpreter at Monticello, Thomas
Jefferson felt his greatest accomplishments were writing the Declaration of
Independence, writing the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom and founding
the University of Virginia (Heilman). These accomplishments are engraved on his
tombstone.
I feel that Thomas Jefferson’s greatest accomplishments and most important legacies were writing the Declaration of Independence and the Louisiana Purchase. The Declaration of Independence established the United States as an independent country and declared our independence from England. The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States. For my National History Day project my website will focus on these two accomplishments.
