At first I had trouble deciding what
thing to do for my National History Day project. I originally was going to do
my history project on George Washington because I live near Mount Vernon. My
parents told me to do a project on someone other than George Washington because
I had been to Mount Vernon many times and had already learned about him. . I
also knew that a lot of people in my class would be doing George Washington. I
also thought about doing my project on Benjamin Franklin or Lewis and Clarke. My
mom suggested Thomas Jefferson because without him there would have been no
Louisiana Purchase, which is the land Lewis and Clarke explored. I don’t know
much about Thomas Jefferson and my parents told me we could visit Monticello
where he lives, so I decided to do my history project on Thomas Jefferson.
For my research I used three books about Thomas Jefferson, “Thomas Jefferson” by Jacqueline Ching, “Who Was Thomas Jefferson” by Dennis Brindell Fradin and “Jefferson’s Masterpiece” by Dennis Parker. I also used three websites, Biography.com, Monticello.com and History.com as resources. For part of my research I visited Monticello in Charlottesville, VA where I interviewed Mr. Jim Heilman, an interpreter at Monticello.
I decided to do a website for my National History Day project I have never created a website before. With a website I can include links, videos, and photos. With a website I am able to add pages with fun facts about Thomas Jefferson and some of his words of advice.
The National History Day theme is Leadership and Legacy. Thomas Jefferson was one of this country’s founding fathers and he was the third president of the United States. Thomas Jefferson had many accomplishments and left us notable legacies. According to Mr. Jim Heilman, an interpreter at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson felt his greatest accomplishments were writing the Declaration of Independence, writing the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom and founding the University of Virginia (Heilman). These accomplishments are engraved on his tombstone.
I feel that Thomas Jefferson’s greatest accomplishments were writing the Declaration of Independence and the Louisiana Purchase. The Declaration of Independence established the United States as an independent country and declared our independence from England. The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States. For my National History Day project my website will focus on these two accomplishments.
